Kumily has a history which is similar to that of the Incarnation Monastery in Agbang, Togo. A local priest in Kerala, India, started a monastic community in the St Angel's Valley outside the town of Kumily in the state of Kerala in southwest India. He opened a house there on December 8, 1987. The foundation was affiliated to the Congregation of St Ottilien on May 10, 1990. Being placed directly under the Congregation, it was established as a domus religiosa on June 16, 1994, and became a simple priory on January 1, 2001. After receiving the necessary permission from Rome, the monks of Kumily began to celebrate Mass and to pray the Divine Office according to the SyroMalabar rite in January 2002.
Kumily lies on the western slopes of the Cardamom Hills on the border with the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. It is about 150 km away from the coastal city of Cochin which has an international airport.
