The Abbey Our Lady of Bethlehem in Bonheid is the youngest shoot on the trunk of the old Benedictine monastic life in Belgium. It was founded the 9th October 1969 on the teritority of the old Bethlehem Priory (1407-end 18th century) of the regular canons of Windesheim in Herent, by five nuns of the abbey Maria Mediatrix (Affligem). The nuns left the original abode in 1975 to reside in Bonheiden (near Mechelen) in an environment that gave stronger guarantees for the cultivation of monastic life.
